Building self-esteem can help career prospects

Many look forward to their last days of studying and earning a living but recent research suggests that girls’ confidence levels plummet as they get closer to the world of work.

The study, carried out by Girlguiding, showed that only 33% of 17-21 year old girls thought they would do as well as their male peers – a rate that dropped from 90% in the nine to 10 year old age group.

“This new research shows girls are lacking in confidence at an important stage in their lives when they are starting to think about the future, enter work or begin university,” said Julie Bentley, Girlguiding’s Chief Executive, who told the BBC that building confidence empowers girls to ‘take on leadership roles from the very earliest age – giving them the safe space and support they need to grow and develop their potential’.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), which is the leading not-for-profit professional hypnotherapy association in the UK, points out that people can suffer from thoughts of low self-esteem, or obsessive thoughts about someone or something which can affect their levels of confidence.

“People can suffer from a wide variety of distressing feelings such as anxiety or inadequacy. Whatever the problem feeling, clinical hypnotherapy can help change such ideas and deal with the problem more specifically than can a drug – and without harmful side effects,” says the NCH.

Successful clinical hypnotherapy is achieved through the application of various hypnotic techniques which work on a person’s subconscious or unconscious mind in such a way as to bring about therapeutic changes.

The NCH-registered therapist, who is fully trained, qualified and insured, with use hypnotherapy for self confidence building to challenge negative thought processes, thereby improving self-image and possibly generating a more positive future.

By being more confident, a positive feeling arises from an appreciation of one’s own abilities,” adds the NCH.

Given that the Girlguiding research further showed that only a quarter of the 17-21 group said they felt ‘powerful’ compared with a third of 11- to 16-year-old girls, clinical hypnotherapy is ideally placed to reverse that downward trend.

Confidence and a good self-esteem level should be effortless and easy to achieve but are often hampered by the demands of modern society, social media and expectations forced upon us as youngsters.

By going to the root of what is causing the lack of self-esteem and causing a young person to be nervous, anxious and lacking in self-belief, the hypnotherapist will ask thought-provoking questions to dig deeper and discover why there is a lack of confidence.

In essence, hypnosis works by re-educating the unconscious mind, giving the person control over responses that they are unable to control consciously.

If you are lacking in self-confidence, or know someone who does, contact an NCH-registered hypnotherapist near you by using their directory. It could have a very positive outcome.
