Gout – An obesity related problem
Gastric bands, gout, sugar and obesity. The headlines in recent days have been warning us that people in the UK have extremely bad eating habits and are in danger of their diets impacting on their health.

According to the BBC, up to two million people in England could be eligible for weight loss surgery. Bariatric surgery, such as fitting gastric bands, can cut the fatal risks from obesity-related problems such as heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. The report added that although it has been growing in popularity, only 8,000 people a year are currently receiving the treatment.

Researchers from Imperial College London believe more than 5 per cent of the adult population would qualify for this drastic operation. Currently, this type of surgery is only available on the NHS to treat people with potentially life-threatening obesity when other treatments haven’t worked.

Another recent research report shows that gout has increased by 64 per cent in the UK between 199 and 2012. Now one in 40 people in the UK is affected, according to analysis of 15 years of results, in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases journal.

The study, published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, was led by Dr Weiya Zhang and Professor Michael Doherty of the University of Nottingham and used the Clinical Practice Research Datalink to estimate the prevalence and incidence of gout for each calendar year in that period. They discovered that the UK has one of the highest rates of gout in Europe, but only one-third of long-term cases currently receive urate-lowering therapies – despite the potential curative effects of such treatments.

Then there were also reports about our ‘habitual dependence’ on sugar and the growing rate of obesity in the UK.

It’s not looking good.

But, besides various medical treatments, special diets and other options, one form of treatment which stands head and shoulders above all others is hypnotherapy.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) has more than 1,800 licensed and fully trained therapists who can help beat bad eating habits.

What is hypnotherapy and how does it work?

It is the application of hypnotic techniques in such a way as to bring about therapeutic changes. As an ‘external influence’ the therapist assists in activating the inner resources of the client to achieve realistic goals.

Bad eating habits – which can influence all of the above problems – can be treated with hypnotherapy.

So, before trying a diet which might fail or resorting to drastic measures like gastric bands, visit the NCH’s therapist directory and find a therapist near you who can help. It is well worth the effort.
